In recent years, with strong advocacy from national policies and industry organizations, day surgery has entered a period of rapid development. Not only has day surgery become widely adopted in public hospitals, but private healthcare institutions have also emerged as outstanding pioneers in this field.
On September 15, the 10th National Day Surgery Academic Annual Conference and the 10th Anniversary Commemoration of the China Day Surgery Alliance were held in Beijing. Renshu ENT's first medical center—Hangzhou Renshu Medical Outpatient Department—was officially accredited as a member unit of the China Day Surgery Alliance. It is reported that this is also the first alliance member to conduct day surgery in an outpatient clinic setting.
Private Medical Outpatient Department Joins China Day Surgery Alliance
The "China Day Surgery Cooperation Alliance" (hereinafter referred to as the "Alliance") is a national professional collaborative organization established under the guidance of the Medical Administration Bureau of the National Health Commission. Led by the National Health Development Research Center, it collaborates with domestic health administrative departments, industry associations, and research institutions to promote policies, management, standards, and nationwide training for day surgery in China.
As of December 2022, the Alliance had 230 member institutions, including 120 full members and 110 observer units, with tertiary hospitals accounting for the majority. The Alliance adopts a "membership admission system," requiring observer units to conduct day surgery for at least one year and perform over 500 cases annually before applying for full membership. Notably, Renshu ENT, as China's sole representative, participated in the 13th International Day Surgery Congress in Portugal in 2019 and was later invited to join the Alliance as an observer unit.
Ma Xiaolei, Medical Director of Renshu ENT, stated that becoming the Alliance's first outpatient-based day surgery member not only recognizes Renshu's years of exploration in this field but also affirms private healthcare's role in advancing day surgery development.
Founded in 2017, Renshu ENT has safely performed nearly 7,000 day surgeries over six years, accumulating extensive ENT-specific expertise. With a highly skilled medical team, advanced surgical equipment, and a rigorous quality management system, Renshu became one of China's first outpatient and day surgery centers to receive DNV International Healthcare Accreditation in 2020.
Upon joining the Alliance, Renshu will deepen exchanges with member institutions, share best practices, optimize day surgery workflows, strengthen talent development, and drive technological innovation—collectively contributing to safe, efficient, and patient-centered day surgery services.
Standardized Perioperative Management and Admission Assessment System
Renshu ENT is one of China's earliest private healthcare institutions to explore independent day surgery centers. It has developed distinctive practices in surgical procedure inclusion, pre/intra/postoperative evaluation, perioperative safety management, and postoperative home care guidance. To ensure patient safety, Renshu has established a comprehensive quality management and service system, guaranteeing standardized and regulated surgical processes.
"No unnecessary surgery" is Renshu ENT's principle. To avoid over-treatment and ensure safety, Renshu implements strict medical evaluation and admission criteria:
Conducting detailed assessments for each patient to confirm suitability for day surgery
Developing tailored surgical plans based on individual conditions and risk levels
Anesthesia support is critical for safe day surgery. Renshu has built an experienced anesthesiology team that:
Selects appropriate anesthesia methods
Monitors vital signs throughout the procedure
Manages the entire perioperative period (especially postoperative analgesia)
Adopts advanced Western practices by involving anesthesiologists in full-cycle safety management
For nursing management, Renshu's nursing team provides:
Preoperative education
Postoperative care guidance
Regarding facility safety:
Operating rooms are equipped with advanced surgical and monitoring devices
Regular maintenance and inspections ensure proper operation
New fully digital ORs under construction will support clinical, teaching and research needs
Quality control mechanisms include:
Comprehensive intraoperative evaluation and analysis
Dedicated group-level quality management center
Continuous process improvement
Safety, Efficiency, and Compassionate Care
While safety is fundamental, efficiency and service quality represent key competitive advantages for private healthcare. To deliver on these values, Renshu:
Implements internationally synchronized medical equipment/technologies
Optimizes scheduling and workflows to reduce wait times
Provides psychological support and personalized care
Maintains post-discharge communication via online platforms
This integrated approach ensures patients receive precise, timely treatment while experiencing genuine care and respect throughout their journey.
Private healthcare institutions are an indispensable force in day surgery
As a pioneer in China's independent day surgery centers and a private outpatient clinic, Renshu ENT's inclusion as a member unit of the China Day Surgery Alliance not only signifies the Alliance's recognition but also demonstrates national encouragement for private healthcare's exploration of day surgery.
Under previous policies, few hospitals below secondary level established independent anesthesiology departments or laminar flow operating rooms. Renshu ENT's early exploration and operation of independent day surgery centers hold significant experimental value for both private healthcare and day surgery development.
As a trailblazer, Renshu ENT has encountered challenges during its development. For instance, some patients remain skeptical about the quality and safety of day surgery, requiring joint efforts from medical institutions, relevant departments, and society to address concerns through patient education and case studies.
Moreover, collaboration with medical insurance authorities and policy support are particularly crucial. Currently, reimbursement policies for day surgery vary across regions, with some areas maintaining low rates. As DRG payment becomes widespread, developing day surgery models will effectively alleviate pressure on national medical insurance funds—an urgent national priority requiring policy promotion and nationwide implementation.
Future Development Trends of Day Surgery
As an experienced operator, Renshu ENT offers predictions for day surgery's future:
Continuous advancement of clinical technologies, including advanced equipment and more complex procedures
Standardized construction of day surgery centers, improving environments, equipment, staffing, and workflows to enhance safety, efficiency, and quality
Strengthened multidisciplinary collaboration, including resource sharing and combined surgeries to improve comprehensive treatment outcomes
Policy support remains essential. With recent national policies like the "Interim Regulations on Day Surgery Quality Management in Medical Institutions" (November 2022), Renshu anticipates ongoing regulatory frameworks to standardize day surgery center development—a key future trend.
Finally, leveraging its Alliance membership, Renshu ENT will enhance collaboration among day surgery centers, promoting information sharing and experience exchange to advance day surgery development and deliver higher-quality medical services.
